The shadar kai are a race of elves whose bodies have been altered by their time in the Shadowfell. They may be the same as dusk elves. The elves who followed the Raven Queen into the Shadowfell were transformed into shadar kai.
What do dusk elves look like?
Dusk elves look similar to Dark Elves, but their skin tends to be lighter, more blue than black. Their hair is mostly white. Like other elves they can live to be over 800 years old.

What is Rahadin?
Rahadin was one of the Dusk Elves. He was exiled for refusing to bow down to a prince he saw weak. When the Dusk Elves declined to pay fealty to King Barov (Strahd’s father) Rahadin helped Barov conquer them. Barov then made Rahadin an honorary member of his family.

According to Curse of Strahd, the dusk elves of Barovia have been nearly annihilated. There are no women or children among the dusk elves. Strahd had all the female dusk elves put to death as a punishment for the murder of one of his betrothed dusk elves named Patrina. Thus the remaining elves can’t procreate and are a broken people.

Why do elves go to the elven afterlife?
