They definitely know they are under some effect — the “booming energy” is perceptible. But they probably don’t know what it will do, or when or why. Imagine you get whacked and have this throbbing energy field around you.
Is booming blade doubled on a crit?
Is the 2ndary damage caused by Booming Blade doubled on a critical as well or only the initial damage? It will double the weapon dice and thunder damage of the initial hit. Damage from moving will be normal. Crits basically only double the very next roll after the crit.

It works really well with the mobile feat or for a swashbuckler who gets the spell somehow. Move in, strike, move away. The target sits there with nothing to do, or they move and take damage.
Which is better booming blade or Green Flame Blade?
Action Surge gives you an additional Action, but no additional Bonus Actions nor Reactions. Booming Blade is generally considered better for single target (since you can get extra damage is the target moves), while Green-Flame Blade is better for multi-target, if there’s a second target within 5′ of the first one.
Do you have to make a successful combat roll to use booming blade?
While Booming Blade requires you to make a successful combat roll, it is still considered a spell. If you were to obtain an additional attack somehow, you will not be able to take it if you cast Booming Blade.
