Just like illegally downloading music and movies, stealing video games via piracy is a federal crime in the United States. Punishment can range from paying back the copyright holder to spending time in jail. Of course, many people pirate software and video games, so it would be impossible for the FBI to catch them all.

Video game piracy is the unauthorized copying and distributing of video game software, and is a form of copyright infringement. Digital distribution of pirated games has historically occurred on bulletin board systems (BBS), and more recently via decentralized peer-to-peer torrenting.
Can you play online on pirated games?
Most pirated games do not allow for multiplayer as the game often has to connect to an official server where its legitimacy can easily be verified by some sort of authentication service. So while I played through Modern Warfare 2’s single player mode twice, I haven’t seen one minute of the mutliplayer mode.
Are cracked games safe to download?
The utmost concern and likelihood are that cracked games commonly have viruses packed with the download file. Maliciously installing a virus as part of game software makes it very difficult for antivirus software to detect and remove the malicious software. Viruses could include spyware, malware, and worse, ransomware.
Does steam detect pirated games?
Steam actively promotes an anti-piracy culture and by offering games at such low prices, you simply don’t have to worry about pirating games anymore! So, in a nutshell, no, Steam does not detect that you are pirating a game!
Is it illegal to download a game you already own?
So yeah, it’s illegal to download a game even if you already own it, however, it is legal to make a copy of it strictly for your private use. But it’s not as easy as it used to be with VHSes and cassette tapes. You can’t just bump something over anymore.
