You’re automatically proficient with the pact weapon you create, regardless of the type of weapon you choose. That’s not the case if you choose to turn a magic weapon into your pact weapon.
Are Warlocks proficient with weapons?
Shortswords are martial melee weapons with the light and finesse properties. As such, they can be used for two-weapon fighting, and Warlocks are not proficient with them.
Does pact of the Blade give you proficiency?
Pact of the Blade neither requires nor grants proficiency with a magic weapon that you turn into your pact weapon.
Can your pact weapon be your hex weapon?
They can be two different weapons. This means every weapon you create with the Pact of the Blade class feature benefits from the Hex Warrior ability. The “If you later” part of the rule is there to cover the fact you gain Hex Warrior at 1st level but gain Pact Boon later at 3rd level, if you choose it.
Do Warlocks need a focus?
No. No spell caster NEEDS an arcane focus. But then you need a component pouch and a free hand to cast spells with material components.
Are Hex weapons magical?
No it doesn’t allow said weapon to be considered magical. The Pact of the Blade feature that allows you to conjure any weapon you might desire is innately magical as is. So in that sense, though these features synergize well, the Hex Warrior’s effect still isn’t the cause of it being magical.
Can a warlock use the Pact of the blade?
I have the pact boon “pact of the blade” which allows my character to create a pact weapon, so a melee weapon. My question is…can my character say, use a greatsword? I was told large weapons such as that can impose disadvantage, but with this pact, I have prof in whatever weapon is summoned. Does it just balance itself out?

What is the benefits of Pact of the Blade instead of just using the “normal” weapons available to a Warlock (assuming I want to use Melee weapons at all)? You are proficient with it. While a warlock is only proficient in “simple weapons” you can create any melee weapon and you are proficient with it.
Can you summon a bow with the Pact of the blade?
You need the Improved Pact Weapon invocation, otherwise the Pact Blade is limited to melee weapons. This is not correct. Improved pact weapon lets you summon long bows, short bows, light and heavy crossbows. It also makes your pact weapon +1 AND lets it be used as your spellcasting focus.
Can you pick any weapon for a pact weapon?
You can pick any melee weapon for a Pact Weapon and still be proficient with it — this is your route to getting a martial weapon as a straight-up Warlock.
