I have a first level spell in my games. It allows druids, rangers and nature clerics to gain an animal companion that follows their verbal commands, but is an NPC. They can cast it at higher levels to get stronger animal allies, and the animal advances in ability with the PC.

The Druid “Multiattack” companion bonus can give a companion with one attack a second one, or improve it’s attacks if it has multiples. Do you gain XP with an animal companion?
Animal companions don’t gain XP or level up in the same way that players do. That said, they do gain hit dice (HD) as your Druid level goes up. Those are listed on the table for the Druid’s Animal Companion.
