Sorcerers have a lot going for them in Dungeons & Dragons, and you can get even more bang for your buck by multiclassing. However, some classes work better with sorcerers than others. Here’s a guide to figure out how to branch out as a sorcerer.
Can a wizard multiclass?
Multiclassing as a fighter, a druid, or even a bard can add interesting depth to your wizard. Wizards gain immense magical power through years of study, which is great, but very boring. Wizards looking for some excitement can branch out by multiclassing. However, not all classes work the same with wizards.
Can I cast shield at a higher level?
You can cast Shield with either a 3rd or 4th level slot but (as there is no enhanced effect for that spell when cast at higher levels – a Shield spell is a Shield spell no matter what level it’s cast at), it would be best to cast it as third level spell – keeping the 4th level slot for future 4th-or-lower level spells.
What does a multiclass sorcerer / wizard have something?
There is no novel feature (like your examples of action surged spells or spellcasting in armor, although you could take feats to be able to do that as a pure wizard) that you get from multi-classing these two.
Can a sorcerer use a found spellbook as a wizard?
You’ll be able to prepare 2 of the wizard spells in your spellbook (Level 1 wizard plus an INT modifier of +1.) These will be in addition to the spells you know as a Sorcerer. The rule around copying a spellbook still apply here (emphasis mine):
How many wizard spells do you have at 1st level?
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know, except your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.
Is it better to be a wizard or a sorcerer?
However, if the ritual spells are the only thing you are looking for, then taking ritual caster will be much more efficient than 1-2 levels of wizard. In general, multi-classing full casters is a bad idea (even those who share a spellcasting ability).
