Not everyone in the party can fly. Sure, aarakocra can fly at will, but the rest of the party can’t.

Normal: Flying creatures can’t fly in medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load.
Can aarakocra wear light armor?
Aarakocra don’t have proficiency in light armor, so the only way way you can wear armor and cast spells is if you pick up light armor proficiency from another class or a feat.
Can an aarakocra fly with a shield?
Aarakocra are dexterous, especially in the air, where they are skilled fliers. However, aarakocra are unable to fly while wearing medium or heavy armor. They are also unable to fly when wielding a shield of any size larger than a small buckler. Aarakocra talons may unlock to become as functional as hands.
Are Aarakocra Al legal?
Unfortunately, the high-flying bird-people known as aarakocra aren’t legal for AL play because of their flying speed. While magic items and spells that grant characters flight like winged boots and fly are AL-legal, races that grant characters flight are considered overpowered, and have thus been banned from AL play.
Why is Aarakocra banned?
Recognizing the headaches caused by flying races, the AL character creation guidelines (Player’s Guide v 9.2) create a specific ban on Aarakocra and Winged Tieflings. Most characters see a significant power bump when entering Tier 2 at 5th level.

Since aarakocra avoided melee combat when possible, their combat tactics revolved around attacking opponents from above. Other weapons used by aarakocra included darts and daggers. Their sharp talons and beaks were effective weapons as well. Occasionally they wore studded leather, but they never used shields.
