Bats rarely fly in the rain And while they once long believed it was because rain droplets affected the bats’ sonar and their use of echolocation, a recent study published in the journal Biology Letters suggests that it’s because their fur holds water, increasing their weight and the energy costs of flight.
Can bats see in the daylight?
Bats are not blind and can in fact see quite well using their eyes. The vision of bats is tuned to low-light conditions such as is present during dawn and dusk. While some bats may not have as good color vision as humans, their overall vision may be better than humans during dawn and dusk.

Bats navigate and find insect prey using echolocation. They produce sound waves at frequencies above human hearing, called ultrasound. The sound waves emitted by bats bounce off objects in their environment. Then, the sounds return to the bats’ ears, which are finely tuned to recognize their own unique calls.

If a bat is spotted during daytime, DO NOT try to be near, touch, kill, any bats under any circumstances. Call a wildlife rescue company immediately to capture it in a safe and humane way. It takes years of training, licensing and experience to trap a bat and relocate them humanely in the wild.
Will bats fly into you?
Bats do not usually come into contact with people since they are active at night. If you do see a bat during the day, and it’s acting strangely – struggling to fly or lying on the ground – the bat could potentially be infected with rabies. Leave that bat alone!
