Fighters are often considered good tanks because they get good health can wear any armor or shield. However that’s when they start to fall off. Fighters also have a few archetypes that can help you out.
How do you become a tank in D&D?
Ways to contribute as a tank:
- Reduce the enemy’s movement so it stays in a hazardous area (e.g. Silence, Moonbeam) or can’t reach your allies.
- Provide a way for allies to get out of melee range without wasting an action.
- Increase your ally’s damage.
- Make it harder to kill your allies.
- Lock down enemy ranged attackers.
Are fighters tanks DND?
D&D is a table-top game, though, so there really is no tank unless you’re talking about whichever character is capable of using full plate or something (“clank, clank, I’m a tank”). By that definition, fighters are already tanks.

The best tank class in D&D is probably the Barbarian. With their damage resistances and ability to have decent hit points, it’s hard to beat them when it comes to tanking. I use the word taunt to mean any means of redirecting enemy aggression towards yourself by giving them an incentive. In most cases it’s imposing disadvantage for them to try to attack not-you.

You can carry a shield and spear, and still get your polearm master bonus attack. You go Path of the Beast and at level 5 hold a shield and still have 3 attacks: Claw – Claw – Claw – bonus action shove.
Should a barbarian use a shield?
The most effective barbarians tend to wield greataxes in combat. Greatsword or maul works as well, but you lose a lot of what makes you special if you use a one-handed weapon. A barbarian fighting with sword and shield can be effective, but it’s not what the barbarian is best at.
