Characters can worship gods of any alignment. The world is full of people that acknowledge that good is better than evil while still being neutral or evil themselves. The most striking example in the planes would be all the lawful good celestials that serve chaotic good gods.
Why would someone worship an evil god?
A lot of folks worship evil deities either because of the power they give, or out of fear of retribution if they do not. There are a lot of other reasons one might worship an evil god or goddess as well-Shar seems like she’d scoop up a lot of bitter, jealous, or emotionally vulnerable people.
Can a good cleric have an evil god?
Clerics and Paladins use divine magic, so both are divine casters. Unlike the sorcerer, the source of a cleric’s magic is not “themselves” but is rather a divine source. A cleric can indeed serve an evil deity.
