Also, iirc, in 3.5 and Pathfinder, the power of the detect magic increased over its duration, so that at first, you’d sense that a magic effect was in the room, then over time, you’d be able to sense its direction. That’s obviously not canon, but it’s how I’d personally rule it if it favored smart play by the PC.
What happens when a creature can’t see you?
When a creature can’t see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it. If you are hidden–both unseen and unheard–when you make an attack, you give away your location when the attack hits or misses. If you can’t see or hear a target, then you will have to guess its location.
