Like druids and rogues, monks use leather armor and can’t use shields, but can use off-hand items. Monks can use the following weapons: fist weapons, one-handed axes, one-handed maces, one-handed swords, polearms, and staves.
Do monks attack with dexterity?
Monks can use either Strength or Dexterity for unarmed attacks or attacks with their Monk weapons. The D&D Beyond sheet will automatically select for you the higher bonus. You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons.
What type of damage do monks do?
A 1st level Monk may only make 1 attack as part of their Attack action. Their unarmed strike will do 1d4 damage (as per Martial Arts) and they can choose to use either their Strength or Dexterity modifier as a bonus to the attack and damage rolls. This attack does depend on any held items or free hands.

Yes. Whether as part of their normal bonus attack when unarmed or wielding a monk weapon or as part of a ‘flurry of blows’, monks apply their ability modifier (Strength or Dexterity) to their damage rolls.
Can a monk use two weapon fighting as a bonus action?
Two-Weapon Fighting does not allow the damage from an attack using a weapon held in your other hand from benefiting from your ability modifier. The Monk has a class feature which simply states they can make an Unarmed Strike using a Bonus Action. It does not infer the same penalty to the attack’s damage as Two-Weapon Fighting.
What makes the monk work as a class?
Martial Arts: This is the key feature that makes the Monk actually work as a class. Most importantly, STR can be dumped in favor of DEX and an extra attack as a bonus action helps keep damage more consistent with other classes. Ki: Ki features some fantastic options for combat that can use your bonus action to maximize action economy.
What do monks do with their ki points?
Most monks can use it to make a followup unarmed strike after an attack. And starting at 2nd level you have even more options now that you have ki points available to you. You can: Spend ki to make TWO attacks as a bonus action. Spend ki to take the dodge action as a bonus action.
