Rarely in Dungeons and Dragons do NPCs go with the party. This NPC ends up going along with the party for some reason but is not as powerful as a normal party member. What is an ally 5e?

Why do players want to recruit lots of NPCs?
TL;DR: I have a player who wants to recruit lots of NPCs to avoid putting his own character in danger and to grab more spotlight for himself. I’m concerned about how this will affect challenge balance and the amount of fun the other players have. He doesn’t want me to run the NPCs either.

Town NPCs generally walk around during the day. They remain still in their assigned houses at night and during events. NPCs have limited health and can take damage, and ultimately die from enemies, traps, lava, or by drowning in water; though they cannot be attacked directly by players (outside of special Voodoo Doll accessories or Rotten Eggs ).
