A mob spawner can be destroyed using any thing, you can light up around the spwaner and make a xp farm which is really useful. With a pickaxe, of course. Beware, however, because even if you use a pickaxe enchanted with silk touch, the spawner will just break.

Apart from safety (for noobs who can’t torch areas quickly), there is no reason to destroy a Spawner. But we only need a few monster spawner farms per world, making the other spawners (once looted) useless.
