Elven Wizards have been able to wield swords for ages in various versions of D&D. They just typically refrain from getting into combat situations where they would be forced to use a sword.

Thankfully, gaining proficiency is easy, as all you need to do is simply use the weapon and its unique ability. You will only need to use the weapon a handful of times in order for it to reach maximum proficiency – spamming it while in combat is a quick and viable technique.

A friend of mine has been training in swordfighting for half a year now, and in matches he’s still getting destroyed by most of his fellow students. Everyone can swing a sword around and hope to hit something, and so can your wizard.
