You can cast Shield with either a 3rd or 4th level slot but (as there is no enhanced effect for that spell when cast at higher levels – a Shield spell is a Shield spell no matter what level it’s cast at), it would be best to cast it as third level spell – keeping the 4th level slot for future 4th-or-lower level spells.
Can you cast shield after knowing the roll?
No. You get to wait to see if the attack would hit you. So the clear intent here is the use it after the attack roll so you know whether or not you’ve been hit.
Can you cast a first level spell with a second level spell slot?
No, spell slots aren’t interchangeable. You can cast a 1st level spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher, but you can’t cast a 3rd level spell with spell slots of 2nd level or lower. Thanks!
Where does shield go on a spell sheet?

Can a warlock spell be cast above 5th level?
As a full Warlock, the spell can never be cast above 5th level because they don’t technically get higher spell slots. I was asking if Armor of Agathys is limited to a maximum of 5th level spell slot because it is a Warlock spell.
