What can you do while maintaining concentration?
While concentrating on a spell, casting another spell is allowed, with the following exceptions:
- casting another spell that requires concentration (PHB p. 203 – Concentration)
- readying a spell (PHB p. 193 – Ready)
- casting a spell with a casting time longer than 1 action (PHB p. 202 – Longer casting times)
Does readying a spell use the slot?
If concentration is broken, or a readied spell is never triggered, it only affects the spell’s energy being lost. It doesn’t affect your spell-slot; you already lost that when you cast the spell.
Can all cantrips be cast as a bonus action?
Yes. If you have a cantrip which you can cast as a bonus action, you may cast it after attacking. There are only a few cantrips which have a casting time of a bonus action.
Can a cleric cast two spells in one turn?
If you cast a spell with a casting time of 1 bonus action, that is the only circumstance in which you follow the rule on casting spells as a bonus action. Even then, you can cast two spells on one turn, but one of them must be a cantrip. (Cantrips are spells.)

There’s no rule that says you can cast only X number of spells on your turn, but there are some practical limits. The main limiting factor is your action. Most spells require an action to cast, and unless you use a feature like the fighter’s Action Surge, you have only one action on your turn.
Do you have to hold a spell to use the ready action?
No, because the Ready Action requires you to cast the spell as normal and then hold it, releasing it with your reaction later. You are using your action to cast the spell on your turn. PHB pg. 193 under Ready, emphasis mine:

As it stands, if you cast any bonus action spell at all, even a cantrip, you’re limited to only casting cantrips for the rest of the turn. Even if you use Action Surge, you still can’t cast a levelled spell.
