With the release of macOS Catalina, Civilization 5 for Mac has been updated to run on 64-bit architecture. Unfortunately, that also means multiplayer cross-play with Windows is disabled. Firaxis have made no commitments to fixing this and there are no known work-arounds.
Will Civ 5 run on my Mac?
Based on the official system requirements, Civ 5 supports MacBooks with Intel HD 4000 graphics. The only models that featured those graphics were the 2012 models, meaning owners of MacBooks from 2012 should be safe too.

Can you download Civ 5 on a Mac?
If Civ 5 will be part of the Steam Play program, then, Yes you will be able to download the Mac version when it releases. (this is further reinforced by the experiences from Civ4)

Can you buy Civilization VI on Steam for Linux?
Until Steam have Civilization VI listed for Linux as well, I won’t be buying the game. So effectively, I probably will end up buying the game like a week or so after release. As for Steam, my experience is that if you own the game, you own the game for all platforms. Even platforms it will be ported to later.
Why do I get version mismatch on Civ games?
