Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). Even if holding the staff in two hands, the unarmed strike can take place as a bonus acttion.
Can a fighter fight with two weapons unarmed?
In the weapons table it doesn’t have the light property generally required for fighting with two weapons, but they’re fists. The rule for Two Weapon Fighting is as follows:
Can you do an unarmed strike with a quarterstaff?
Even if holding the staff in two hands, the unarmed strike can take place as a bonus acttion. Or, you can use your bonus action for a flurry of blows. With flurry of blows you make the normal attack action with the quarterstaff. You then spend a ki point and get two unarmed strikes as bonus action.
Can you make an unarmed strike as a bonus action?
For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarterstaff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. Here we see that you can make an unarmed strike as a bonus action after taking an Attack action.
Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
What is the attack roll for Unarmed Strikes?
Clearly the Strength modifier is added to the damage, but I’m asking about the attack roll. Attack roll for unarmed strikes = d20 + proficiency bonus + Strength modifier. Unarmed strikes are, in fact, melee weapon attacks – even though they’re not made with a weapon.
How is a grapple attack different from an attack roll?
Although a grapple attempt is called a “special melee attack,” it uses a contested ability check (a contest) instead of an attack roll and, as such, does not result in either a hit or a miss (which are terms exclusively associated with attack rolls). This ruling is confirmed by Jeremy Crawford in the Sage Advice Compendium:
Can a Goliath use an ogre’s unarmed strike?
Of course, if a goliath found an ogre’s unarmed strike lying around, he could use it at no penalty. A human would take a -2. -Hyp. One could fairly easily slip in a substitution level to do that. Maybe exchange Still Mind for it, and note clearly that it overlaps with Improved Natural Attack (Monk), so it doesn’t stack.
