No, it can’t. When the book references this, it’s not just talking about a physical object like a rock. “Things” accounts for all things. This illusory object impedes nothing and is only an illusory trick of the eye, but this is where the concept of magic comes in.
Does silent image provide cover?
No, but it can provide obscurement. Walls, trees, creatures, and other obstacles can provide cover during combat, making a target more difficult to harm. The game mechanic that represents the sight-blocking effect of something like an illusion is obscurement.
Can minor illusion block line of sight?
Basically, you need to completely block line of sight from the creature you want advantage on, to yourself. You also, theoretically need to maintain said blockage of line of sight to your opponent until the moment you attack… The way this probably works best is if you’re a halfling and cast this the turn before.
How does a silent image work in D & D?
The image appears at a spot within range and lasts for the duration. The image is purely visual; it isn’t accompanied by sound, smell, or other sensory effects.
Do you have to be in line of sight to cast a spell?
No. You don’t need to be within line of sight or within range to maintain concentration on a spell, unless a spell’s description or other game feature says otherwise. The Sage Advice Rules of Spellcasting article on Wizards’ site confirms this:
What can you do with the silent image?
Silent image is actually rather useful. Need to sneak into a fort? Wait til dawn and use it to mirror the ground underneath to cover your party (they still need their own move silent though). Use it to produce enemies to distract your opponent (Hey, sometimes vision overrides!) Illusions are a VERY powerful thing to those with imagination!
Do you have to be within line of sight for concentration spells?
You don’t need to be within line of sight or within range to maintain concentration on a spell, unless a spell’s description or other game feature says otherwise. It does specify that PHB 203 applies for concentration spells too, and nor range nor LoS is limiting concentration. (Grease and Alarm isn’t concentration spells, but Web is.)
