You just use it as a reaction to getting attacked. You don’t need to ready the Reaction to use Shield. You take your full turn as normal, and ASSUMING you don’t use your Reaction on your turn (or the previous turn if the foe goes before you), you can then use your Reaction to cast Shield.

You can use your action to control the hand. So you would need to use your action each turn to Ready the hand against the first attack made against you. This only allows you to move and use any bonus action you may get. A shield held in your hand does this for free against all attacks.
