Per the spell’s description, Shillelagh is cast on a club or quarterstaff that you are holding. If you are trying to cast Shillelagh on a spear, that’s a bit of a stretch. The spell is meant to work with a bludgeoning weapon.
Can I cast Shillelagh on a staff?
