Bards don’t prepare spells in D&D 5th edition. Members of a few classes, including bards and sorcerers, have a limited list of spells they know that are always fixed in mind. Instead of preparing spells, Bards simply have spells known, and they can expend spell slots to cast one of their known spells.
What spells should I get as a bard?
The ones that really popped out are:
- Cure Wounds (1): self explanatory.
- Faerie Fire (1): Really boost the effectiveness of ally fighters.
- Thunderwave (1): Surrounded by mooks?
- Dispel Magic (3): self explanatory.
- Dimension Door (4): cheers.
Are all bards musicians?
There’s nothing in 5e to imply that Bards are necessarily musicians. You get proficiency with musical instruments, but it doesn’t mean you need to use them.

What can a bard do with a healing word?
Healing word lets a bard restore health points very quickly to another creature. What makes this spell so excellent is that it only costs a bonus action rather than a character’s action! This means that our superstar bard can heal an ally and, in the same turn, cast a cantrip, use an item, or even play a song to taunt their enemies.
