Do warlocks need material components?
Yes, you are correct. Spells that require a material component can be cast only by handling that component or holding the focus. Material components with a cost or are consumed (or both) are the exception, you need specifically those components.
Do you need components for Cantrips?
No. Cantrips are spells, just like any other spell. Cantrips do not use up a spell slot. Cantrips can be cast on the same turn that a spell is cast using a bonus action.
Do pact of the tome Cantrips count as warlock spells?
When you gain this feature, choose three Cantrips from any class’s spell list (the three needn’t be from the same list). They don’t count against your number of Cantrips known. If they don’t appear on the Warlock spell list, they are nonetheless Warlock Spells for you.
Can you change Cantrips in Pact of the tome?
There aren’t any ways to add extra cantrips to your Tome, short of creating a custom feat or custom Invocation. Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
Why do I need the Pact of the Tome?
I mention the Pact of the Tome specifically because it seems as if this flavor of Warlock specifically could justify doing so more easily since this type of Warlock can already learn ritual spells from other classes. Which is the best Cantrip for a warlock?
Guidance is a good one if the cleric doesnt have or forgets constantly to use it. Go for utility, as a warlock you already have the best damage cantrip in the game. Unless if for some weird reason you are going melee, then shillelagh and/or blade cantrips from SCAG are options. Thorn whip from the druid list.
How are the Cantrips recorded in the pact?
Probably the strictest RAW interpretation is that you get a blank book back but still have access to the same three cantrips. The pact does not explicitly state that the cantrips are recorded in the book only that having your Book of Shadows on your person allows you to cast them at will.
Can you cast ritual spells as a warlock?
You can also cast a warlock spell you know as a ritual if it has the ritual tag. On your adventures, you can add other ritual spells to your Book of Shadows. When you find such a spell, you can add it to the book if the spell’s level is equal to or less than half your warlock level (rounded up) and if you can spare the time to transcribe the spell.
