What do spell components mean?
Components. A spell’s components are the physical requirements you must meet in order to cast it. Each spell’s description indicates whether it requires verbal (V), somatic (S), or material (M) components. If you can’t provide one or more of a spell’s components, you are unable to cast the spell.

What is a somatic spell?
The somatic component was a basic part of spellcasting. Many spells required the caster to make a motion to cast the spell. Wearing armor or using a shield interfered with the somatic components of arcane spells, creating a risk of spell failure.
Can I cast shillelagh and another spell?
Basically, you can, so long as the second spell is a cantrip with a casting time of one action. So Shillelagh + Fire Bolt (or any other action cantrip) is fine, but Shillelagh + Fireball (or any other leveled spell, or non-action spell) is not.
What do the components of a spell do?
A spell description lists the components required to Cast the Spell. For most spells, the number of components is equal to the number of actions you must spend to Cast the Spell. Each component adds certain traits to the Cast a Spell activity, and some components have special requirements.
Can you remove material components from a spell?
As mentioned above, material components can be mostly eliminated in favour of an arcane focus. The possibility of swapping out the bat guano tells us that there’s nothing about bat guano that is necessary for the magic of the spell to occur.

Can you play an instrument when casting a spell?
You can usually also play an instrument for spells requiring verbal components, instead of speaking. If you’re a cleric Casting a Spell from the divine tradition while holding a divine focus (usually a religious symbol or text ), you can replace any material component the spell requires by using the divine focus as a focus component instead.
