You’re correct that spellcasting does not trigger an attack of opportunity. Spells that involve ranged spell attack rolls (such as fire bolt or eldritch blast) get disadvantage if the caster is engaged in melee when casting them, just the same as ranged weapon attacks.
Do spells provoke attacks of opportunity 2e?
Cast a Spell does not inherently trigger Attacks of Opportunity. Cast a Spell, on its own, is not a Manipulate action (it does not have the manipulate trait), it is not inherently a ranged attack, it is not a move action (it does not have the move trait), therefore it does not provoke attacks of opportunity on its own.
Do attacks of opportunity stop movement?
It is hitting with an opportunity attack that stops the movement. If the Sentinel misses with the opportunity attack the creature can move away normally. Creatures within 5 feet of you provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach.
Does Pathfinder 2e have attacks of opportunity?
Feat 6. Trigger A creature within your reach uses a manipulate action or a move action, makes a ranged attack, or leaves a square during a move action it’s using. * This archetype offers Attack of Opportunity at a different level than displayed here.
When does casting a spell provoke an attack of opportunity?
@Morph The DM is probably thinking older rules – in D&D3.5, casting a spell (among a pile of other things) did provoke an attack of opportunity. The caster could step away 5 feet to avoid it, but that was all the movement for the turn.
Can a spell provoke an opportunity attack in D & D 5e?
Casting spells never provokes an opportunity attack in D&D 5e. See the rules for Opportunity Attacks on the SRD:
When do you have an attack of opportunity?
When you make a ranged attack with a weapon, a spell, or some other means, you have disadvantage on the attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature who can see you and who isn’t incapacitated. You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach.
How can I avoid casting a spell with disadvantage?
The enemy must trigger an opportunity attack while within 5 feet of you. That means there are three ways to avoid casting a spell with disadvantage. Cast a spell with no attack roll, like Sacred Flame or Disintegrate.
