I didn’t like Beyond the Sword that much though, (I think it was the tweaks to the tech tree, or maybe Espionage?) so I tend to prefer playing Warlords.
Can you play beyond the sword and colonization?
If you try to just buy “Beyond the Sword”, it will let you get to check out but tell you you have to first install the original. As described above, just installing “Beyond the Sword” will give you the original and the two expansion packs. “Colonization” is a seperate game. The main problem is how this might affect mods, like Fall From Heaven 2.
