When does a Paladin get a second level spell?

I feel like a large part of your problem is that your DM isn’t handling the mount well. A paladin doesn’t get a second level spell slot until level 5, but the spell doesn’t list any example mounts over CR 1/2, which is right in line with a CR 1/2 worg. Many CR 5 monsters could shred a CR 1/2 mount in one turn with little trouble.
