The Grappler feat gives advantage to attack grappled foes, and opens the possibility of pinning an opponent to impose the restrained condition. While this follows the 5e design philosophy of making something you can do better, it violates its aversion to locking logical actions behind a feat tax.
What does grappling do DND 5e?
You move at half speed while grappling, but you can drag and shove the other guy along with you. For most races, this means you’re only moving 15 feet, but that can be all you need. You can also stop grappling somebody at any time (no action required), so you can totally drag somebody over to a cliff and toss them off!
Does grappling do damage 5e?
While grappling, you can deal damage to your opponent equivalent to an unarmed strike. Make an opposed grapple check in place of an attack. If you win, you deal nonlethal damage as normal for your unarmed strike (1d3 points for Medium attackers or 1d2 points for Small attackers, plus Strength modifiers).
Can creatures grapple?
Generally, no. The monster’s Multiattack entry will specify not just the number of attacks they can take, but which of their attacks (defined in the same section of their statblock) they are allowed to take. They can’t just swap any of those out with grapple or shove or any other attacks they might have.
How does grappling work in DND basic 5e?
It’s a contest: the attacker makes a Strength (Athletics) check, and the defender can choose between Strength (Athletics) and Dexterity (Acrobatics) to resist. If you win, your foe has the “grappled” condition.
Are there any rules for grappling in 5th edition?

When do you need to grapple someone in dungeons and Dragons?
You mainly want to grapple someone when their movement is giving you problems or you want them to be elsewhere, and shoving them is not good enough. In addition to normal grappling, there is a feat in the player’s handbook called Grappler, which allows you to restrain your target at the cost of retraining yourself as well.
Can a grappler be both offensive and defensive?
Grappling can also grant huge benefits from both an offensive and a defensive point of view, especially when combined when shoving prone! Mechanically, grappling is almost always in favor of a good grappler. Grappling is resisted by either an Athletics or Acrobatics skill check of a DC equal your Athletics skill check.
