RAW, there’s no range limit to maintain concentration on a spell or to apply the secondary effect of Heat Metal. It’s extremely powerful in very specific situations, and absolutely worthless outside those situations.
Do you have to stay in range for heat metal?
Yes. You have to be within 60′ to heat the metal. After that, the onus is on the target to either break your concentration, or get out of the armor/drop the metal object. Concentration is the limiting factor on this spell.
Does heat metal stack?
The effects of the same spell cast multiple times don’t combine, however. Instead, the most potent effect – such as the highest bonus – from those castings applies while their durations overlap, or the most recent effect applies if the castings are equally potent and their durations overlap.
What happens when you cast heat metal at a higher level?
If it doesn’t drop the object, it has disadvantage on Attack Rolls and Ability Checks until the start of your next turn. At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd Level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot above 2nd.
How much fire damage does heat metal do?
Any creature in physical contact with the object takes 2d8 fire damage when you cast the spell. Until the spell ends, you can use a Bonus Action on each of your subsequent turns to cause this damage again.

These targets are designed to move and ring louder with these smaller rounds. Target will last forever with proper use AR400 steel is a special high carbon steel hardened to withstand repeated shots, bullets simply bounce off or vaporize upon impact.
How big of a target do I need for an AR500?
1/2” AR500 targets easily withstand rifle rounds up to 338. 1/2” are the preferred thickness for rifles used in heavy Club use or Military / Police training. Ensure speed of bullet is below 2900fps at point of impact to avoid pitting.
