The issue with Magic Initiate is that while you know the spell, the feat doesn’t grant you the ability to cast it from a spell slot.
Do Cantrips from Magic initiate level up?
The Magic Initiate feat, as you’ve correctly noted, lets you learn two Cantrips, and Cantrips scale with your character level, not your caster level. This means that your Initiate-Rogue can get the full, scaling power of their Cantrips for the rest of their life!
Who can take magic initiate?
There is no restriction on Wizards taking the Magic Initiate feat and taking additional Wizard spells. Choose a class: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard. You learn two cantrips of your choice from that class’s spell list. In addition, choose one 1st-level spell from that same list.
Can a magic initiate learned spell be cast with spell slots?
That’s not true. Spell slots are not per-class. If you’re a Wizard 10/Cleric 10, you can cast either class’s spells from any of your spell slots, including upcasting any of them to 6th-9th level. You just max out at 5th level spells in either class.
Do you have to make a melee attack with booming blade?
For instance, Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade (SCAG, p. 142-143) are not dependent on a melee spell attack. Instead you must make an attack with a melee weapon. They say: As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails.
What happens if you do not use booming blade?
If you do not make a melee attack while casting this spell, Booming Blade will fail. Should you hit the target, you will not only apply the same effect as if you were making a regular melee attack, you will also encase your target with booming energy until the start of your next turn.
When to use booming blade as a spellcaster?
If you are wearing something made of leather, which is appropriate for a spellcaster, your hit points are more likely to take a majority of the damage. You should use Booming Blade when you are forced into hand-to-hand melee combat, and when it is at a higher level.
