Having the thrown weapon property does not cause a weapon to qualify for sneak attack.

Rogues. Most thrown weapons are intended for Rogues due to the two abilities below, and that most thrown weapons have agility and other Rogue-beneficial stats on them. A Rogue can apply poisons to his/her thrown weapon, which gives the weapon the ability to apply the damage and/or debuff caused by the selected poison.
Can you sneak attack with a non finesse weapon?

Classes. Rogues, Warriors, and Hunters start with the Throw ability. The Warrior ability [Heroic Throw] does not require a thrown weapon.
Can a rogue use a sneak attack with a melee weapon?
Making a ranged attack does not imply using a ranged weapon. The thrown property allows you to make a ranged attack by throwing the melee weapon despite it being a melee weapon. Whether or not you throw a melee weapon does not matter. If it lacks the finesse property, then it won’t work with Sneak Attack.
Can a ranged Rogue effectively stand back and?
You are able to just sit back and use your sneak attack with your bow every round as long as your buddies are in melee with the enemy or if you qualify for any of the other requirements to use sneak attack. I would beg to differ on these answers as the only ranged “finesse” weapons in the game are a dagger and a dart.
When do you know how to strike subtly in Rogue?
Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe’s distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon. The key thing to note there is once per TURN (not round).
Do you need finesse for a sneak attack?
Sneak attack requires a finesse OR a ranged weapon. A thrown hand-axe acts as a ranged weapon no matter what stat is used to modify the roll. If it said finesse AND ranged, I would agree with you. But it clearly doesn’t.
