Does the darkness spell affect the caster?
The darkness spell doesn’t grant the caster the ability to see through it. The Dungeons & Dragons rules are pretty good about such things – if it did give such an ability, it would state so within the text of the spell.

Each creature in the area who sees the pattern must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature becomes charmed for the duration. Being a creature in the area, the caster should be subject to the effect if he sees the pattern.
