A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell’s material components — or to hold a spellcasting focus — but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.
How do you use an arcane focus?
An arcane focus is a Special item designed to channel the power of arcane Spells. A Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard can use such an item as a Spellcasting Focus, using it in place of any material component which does not list a cost.
Can you cast without arcane focus?
1 Answer. Yes, you can cast prepared spells which require only Verbal and/or Somatic components when deprived of your focus. (As long as you can produce the Verbal and Somatic components, that is.) The focus only functions to replace (subject to the limitations you mentioned) such Material components as are required.
What happens when you use your Arcane focus?
Your arcane focus will never be used up. Some spells consume their material components though and those spells have notes in their descriptions saying that the material components are consumed by the spell. Protection from Evil and Good is a spell where the components are consumed by casting the spell.

You don’t need to ‘hold’ your component pouch/focus – but you do need to be able to touch it. In this case, you can wield your dagger in one hand and then have your free hand access your Material/Somatic Components during the casting.
