Your character’s initiative modifier equals your Dexterity modifier plus any modifiers from class, race, or other features. Once you have worked out your initiative modifier, note it on your character sheet.
Can you hold your initiative?
No. There is no delay action in the PHB or BD&D. The only way to postpone your action is to ready an action† and wait for the specified trigger. Using this action burns your reaction, but does not change initiative as in previous editions.
Is initiative a skill 5e?

You can ready an action, you cannot delay your turn. If you’ve got multiattack and have to wait for the enemies to come to you, you cannot choose to delay your turn until theirs has passed. You can ready an action to attack them only once, not multi, which takes both your action and reaction to do.

The answer to that question is no. The only means to acting at a different turn in the round than that which was assigned to you via Initiative rolls is the Ready action.
