To cast one of your warlock spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot. For example, when you are 5th level, you have two 3rd-level spell slots. To cast the 1st-level spell thunderwave, you must spend one of those slots, and you cast it as a 3rd-level spell. Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher.
Can Warlock change spells on level up?
Yes. Warlock can change the spells they know only when they reach a new level. They gain spells according to the Warlock chart on p. 106 of the Player Handbook.
How many spell slots does a warlock have?
A 20th level warlock has 4 spell slots per short rest. At 2 short rests per day you’re casting 12 spells, all at 5th level, plus one spell each of levels 6, 7, 8, and 9. That’s a total output of 90 spell levels worth of spells. Wizards, with spell slots of 4 3 3 3 3 2 2 1 1, have a total output of 89 spell levels worth of spells.
When do you learn a new Warlock spell?
When you reach 6th level, for example, you learn a new warlock spell, which can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level. Mystic Arcanum are the higher “levels” of magic but they are treated somewhat differently as a balancing tool given how frequently a Warlock regains their slots.
How does spell slot recovery work for Warlock?
Apart from that spells known, spell slot recovery etc. are separate for each class and work exactly the same way as for a single class wizard or warlock at the level you have in each class. I have never really looked at the warlock, but I have done multiclassing in the past.
When do you get invocations as a warlock?
Plus – warlocks always cast their spells at the highest level possible for their level. So at 9th level, you’re casting all of your spells as 5th level spells. Plus – warlocks get invocations, some of which allow you to cast another spell once per day, and some of which are always on and can be used an infinite amount per day.
