If you want a way to dispel Darkness, here’s a couple:
- Dispel Magic.
- Daylight (“If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of darkness created by a spell of 3rd level or lower, the spell that created the darkness is dispelled.”)
Does darkness put out fire?
RAW: no. Firebolt doesn’t say it creates light and thus it is unaffected by darkness. RAI/common sense: no. A firebolt would obviously create light, but Darkness is only meant to cancel out light-based spells.
Can a Lightbringer illuminate or dispel the darkness?

Do you get light from spells or light items?
Light from spells or any magic item can illuminate the area of darkness, but a magic item or the light cantrip will not dispel the Darkness (permanently). When casting Darkness it does instantly dispel any spells in its area which are providing magic light if that spell is below 2nd level.
What’s the difference between Magic Light and magical darkness?
Essentially, magical darkness was an area-effect blindness effect. Darkness dispells flaming sphere too as it is a spell of 2nd level that creates light. And the spell was discussed here at length. It is a nice reminder though that light from magic items may be magical too.
