The quarry is a Buildcraft machine that is used to automatically mine out large areas. By default, it will mine out a 9×9 area with a frame of 11×11. However, this can be extended to a max of 62×62 mining area with a frame of 64×64 or shortened to a minimum of a 3×3 frame by using landmarks (only 3 are required).

There is no need for a wood pipe to fetch the items, the Quarry will place the items into a connected stone, cobblestone, gold, iron, or diamond pipe on its own. If the lava is converted to obsidian or cobblestone, the quarry will start re-mining those blocks.

You only need 3 landmarks to create a quarry area, start at the point where you want to place the quarry and place a REDSTONE torch down before your landmark. Placing this redstone torch down will give you blue guidelines and makes it easier to get the right line and height for the other landmark positions.
