While followers will attempt to remain at your side, there are some places in Skyrim where they cannot accompany you (such as jail). They will wait outside for you to reappear, but after waiting 3 days, your follower will leave. Should a follower ever leave your service, they will return to their normal lives.
Where does Lydia go if you don’t have a house?
If you don’t have a house then she’s in Dragonreach, if you have bought Breezehome in Whiterun she will be there unless you have made her a Blade then she’ll be at Sky Haven Temple. There’s a rumor if you do the Stormcloak quest where you take over Whiterun you lose her and can’t get her back.
Is there a bug with no follower trespass?
This has been known to lead to major bugs, such as when a waiting follower accidentally moves into a trespass zone with you, and you can no longer tell the follower to actually follow you any more, so it gets stuck there.
How does no follower trespass dialog work in Skyrim?

If you use the wait command for a few days (default T on PC) then eventually “Your follower tires of waiting and leaves”.
