Its part of the problem to need to find the lightning storms and then not be quite sure how to go about getting the creeper to do as you want. If you find one you want to keep, give him a name by nametag, and he won’t despawn.

Can a creeper detect you through a wall?

They can spawn as far as 128 (I think) blocks away and come over to you. Their sight though is only 16 so that means, if they are aware of you and spawning and waiting, that they are spawning within 16 blocks and can see (sense) you even in your house.
