Stairs can be placed either right side up or upside-down:
- Pointing at a block top or the bottom half of a block side places the stairs right side up.
- Pointing at a block bottom or the top half of a block side places the stairs upside-down.

To remove down stairs, dig a channel on them. Note that the stupid dwarf will want to do this from a tile on the level of the stairs if one is available – magma and deep water will prevent this. To eliminate up/down stairs, remove the up stair first.
Can a down stair be converted into an up stair?
Up stairs can be converted to up/down stairs by using dj to designate down stairs on them. However, down stairs cannot be converted to up/down stairs by using du to designate up stairs on them. This is only possible with a constructed up/down stair bCx on top of the down stair . Designating an up-stair on a wall changes it into an up-stair.
