Why do we feel sad for fictional characters?
The ability to identify emotionally, or to feel the emotions of, fictional characters, is because of our human ability to empathize. So, you read and visualize about someone being depressed – result, you feel sad. You see someone being rejected in a film and they cry – result, you cry too.
What makes a story sad?
The best way to make a story sad or tragic is to have a lot of established humanity. We have to have fallen in love with these characters or have invested our interests in them. Then, after a struggle (conflict) you can have it so that the character not make it.
