There’s two ways to get this done in 5th Edition D&D:
- You can do this normally by using one of your attacks to make a shove attack.
- The Shield Master feat allows you to to this by tapping into your bonus action. As a result of some errata, you can only use the bonus action shield shove after you use your Attack action.
Can shields be used to attack?
There are no rules for specifically attacking with a shield. There are two options you could use: improvised weapon and unarmed attack.

A shield is not a weapon, it is basically armor, that’s why heavy armored knights rarely used shield and that’s why hoplites didn’t wear armor on their torso and upper legs, because the shield was just enough to cover almost the entire body.

Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them. The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach.
Can You shove someone with the shield Master feat?
The Shield Master feat lets you shove someone as a bonus action if you take the Attack action. Can you take that bonus action before the Attack action? No. The bonus action provided by the Shield Master feat has a pre-condition: that you take the Attack action on your turn.
Can a shield master take a bonus action before an attack?
For Shield Master, that means the bonus action must come after the Attack action. You decide when it happens afterward that turn No, it can’t. You can’t take the bonus action attack before the Attack action, because the bonus action attack is conditional upon you taking that action.

Clarification about bonus actions: if a feature says you can do X as a bonus action if you do Y, you must do Y before you can do X.
