Basically, Magic Find makes more of the items that drop be magical or better (Rare/Set/Unique). If you have 100% +MF, if an item dropped normally had a 10% chance to be magical, it will now have a 20% chance. You won’t get more items dropping, but the ones that do drop will be better items.
Does MF work for Runes?
Will Magic Find work on Runes? No. It has no bearing on the number of Runes you’ll find (you don’t find more magic items and less Runes for example, nor is there a greater chance of getting a Rune or a better Rune, etc.).
Is there Magic Find in diablo3?
This is no longer the case and in Reaper of Souls and Diablo 3 version 2, Magic Find is of minimal benefit. Note that this is based upon the monsters’ chance to drop an item. So having 100% Magic Find does not guarantee a Unique/Rare/Set drops.

When does a hireling use the magic find?
When a Hireling gets a kill, it uses the combined Magic Find of the Hireling and you. When in a party, the chance to get a Magic Item will be determined on the player who makes the killing blow.
