A suit of plate armor is a manufactured metal object. From heat metal: “Choose a manufactured metal object, such as a metal weapon or a suit of heavy or medium metal armor, that you can see within range.” As long as the Animated armor is considered a valid target for heat metal then it should take damage.

How long does the heat metal spell last?
Closed 4 years ago. Heat metal is a 2nd level spell that lasts 1 minute (concentration), deals 2d8 damage per round, and has no save. If a Druid casts Heat metal from hiding at 60′ on a knight and dashes away, then the knight ends up taking 20d8 damage, since it takes 1 min to doff heavy armor.
Can a help doffing armor halve the damage?
Having help doffing armor will halve the damage, since you would only be wearing it and affected by the spell for half the time. This, however, only works with medium or light armor, as heavy armor still takes longer to doff than the spell causes damage, even with help.
Can a PC take off their armor with heat metal?
Let the PC take it off with a standard action, but doing so damages the armor, preventing them from wearing it again until they have it repaired. There is no requirement for a PC or NPC whose gear is affected by heat metal to react taking off their armor.
