Is Dungeon of the mad mage good for a new DM?
The amount of content here is amazing, and there is plenty here to run players through their last 15 levels quite easily. Even if you aren’t running the book front to back, Dungeon of the Mad Mage can be a good resource for a DM to pull a dungeon level out of and run as part of another campaign.
How long does it take to play waterdeep?
Lords of Waterdeep at 2-4 is basically the same length, but it plays a little longer with 5. Our games usually only take 45 minutes.

Both. It’s the biggest dungeon slog to date, but each level is interesting in its own way. If you want a dungeon adventure to just sit back and run casually, this is your best bet. There is plenty of story and motivation on each level, and its almost laughable how much there is.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is not specifically intended for new DMs, but it doesn’t specify any particular level of skill, either. Dragon Heist is great for a group that’s more into RP/story than combat and mechanics, but it does require more effort from the DM.

If they’re into role playing and investigation they should be fine. Dragon Heist is really new player and DM IMO, that is, unless their first response is to attack. It can also be friendly to new players, but much of that depends on the DM. It is about on par with SKT in terms of accessibility.

Although it is a fantastic adventure, it is NOT in anyway beginner friendly. There requires a degree of skill required to run the modules to its potential. It is a really deadly campaign that is not beginner friendly without dm help.

Icewind Dale isnt’ bad, it’s actually really good, I just wouldn’t sic it on newbies. If you want to get started, look at the essentials kit. It has everything you need to get started. The adventure has a lot of environmental aspects to it (blizzards, avalanches, etc) on top of combat and social interactions.
