Eldritch Smite’s functionality has no bearing on how multiclass spellcasting works. It’s because of what I said: you can knock flying creatures prone with it and they get no save (not even Legendary Resistance). That’s too powerful to allow more than 2-3 times per combat.
How much damage does Eldritch smite do?
Once per turn when you hit a creature with your pact weapon, you can expend a warlock spell slot to deal an extra 1d8 force damage to the target, plus another 1d8 per level of the spell slot, and you can knock the target prone if it is Huge or smaller.
Does Eldritch smite work with booming blade?
Yup, so long as you use your pact weapon you can smite and boom. The only negative is that you lose out on your extra attack if you took the thirsting blade invocation.

So you clearly choose to smite after you hit a creature. There’s no way of knowing if you hit, but not if you crit unless the DM is rolling all attack rolls.
Can you Eldritch smite with a ranged weapon?
Improved Pact Weapon allows you to choose a ranged weapon (except hand crossbow) as your pact weapon. Eldritch Smite requires a hit with a pact weapon (and the damage starts at 4d8).

Casting it as 1st level is 1d8, and any extra level is +1d8. This gives 3d8. Casting it naturally deals 1d8, independent of spell slot. Then another (level)d8 dice from the spell slot. This gives 4d8. Ultimately I find the wording confusing.
Is it legal to stack divine Smite and Eldritch Smite?
As was specified here, Divine Smite is not treated as a spellcasting, so it doesn’t count towards the ‘One Spell Per Round’ rule. Presumably, neither would Eldritch Smite. As far as I can tell, this appears to be a legal way to burn a ton of resources at once to generate a massive burst of damage. Am I correct?
