A bag of holding is an enchanted item that has an interior space considerably larger than its outer dimensions, roughly two feet in diameter at the mouth and four feet deep. One bag can hold up to five hundred pounds, not exceeding a volume of sixty-four cubic feet.
What can go in a bag of holding?
Size: Objects of up to 10’×5’×3′ can fit inside the bag. Weight: Up to 10,000 coins of weight can be placed in the bag. When full: The bag weighs 600 coins. The modern version of the Bag of Holding (D&D 5th edition) is more or less identical to the B/X one, but carries “only” 500 pounds of weight.
Do things spoil in the bag of holding?
The berries look funny (blueish) for about 15 minutes after they are removed from the environment, but they don’t spoil (but they do go bad after a period of time – just takes a much longer time).
Is a bag of holding a rare item?
The Bag of Holding (DMG pg. 153) is an uncommon magic item and has a significantly greater volume than any of the pouches (or even all combined) of Heward’s Handy Haversack (DMG pg. 174), which is rare.

If putting a Bag of Holding inside another Bag of Holding is allowed, conceivably a player character could carry a king’s ransom in gold or an entire army on his back given enough Bags of Holding.
Does a bag of holding appear empty?
If 50% of its capacity is full, the bag appears 50% full. If it’s empty, it looks empty. This has never really come up in terms of putting the Bag inside of something else…but has always been an easy way for characters in-game to tell how full the Bag is at a glance.
Can a bag of holding be destroyed from the inside?
The bag weighs 15 pounds, regardless of its contents. If the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed, and its contents are scattered in the Astral Plane. If the bag is turned inside out, its contents spill forth, unharmed, but the bag must be put right before it can be used again.
Can you put a bag of holding in another bag of holding?
Yes, but that’ll destroy both and create other havoc. But the bag does create an extradimensional space. We know this from the descriptions of the handy haversack and portable hole, each of which list the bag of holding as creating one of these dangerously-incompatible spaces.
