What does an Arcana check do?
Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants for those planes. So using this skill in these circumstances does seem a good fit.

Is it necessary to roll an ability check?
Whether something requires an Action to do and whether a successful check is necessary to do it are completely separate questions.
