Alter Self is pretty much the better spell overall, but that’s for a good reason: it’s a 2nd level spell, while Disguise Self is only 1st level. If you go with Alter Self, you won’t have as many spell slots you’re allowed to cast it out of.
Can alter self give you a tail?

It lasts an hour with no option for increasing the duration. Thus it would just 1 hour times however many spell slots the wizard has of 2nd level or higher.
